To become a police officer, the selection process is stringent. Why? It is imperative that the police department not hire someone that will embarrass the agency later on. They have to protect themselves against potential lawsuits and officers using poor judgment. This one reasons is why it is not nearly as easy to become a part of the police force as it once was.

If you want to become a police officer, you must have good moral character, a clean background and a good reputation. If you are lacking in any of these areas, then being a cop is not the right career for you. But, how does the police department know what type of character and morals that you have?
The two ways the department finds out about you are through the police panel interview and the extensive background check that they perform. The background check is even more in depth than before because of the potential of leaving themselves open to lawsuits. Through the background check, they may interview neighbors, old teachers, your pastor or priest, friends or anyone else who might have insight into who you are morally and ethically.

The background check is a process that can take months, but if you pass, you will move onto the police officer oral interview. This is the time when you can sell yourself as a viable candidate to the department. Although this is also not an easy test, it is your time to shine and show who you really are, which should back up the findings from the background check. Be sure to answer the questions as honestly as you can, and if you move forward, you will then be tackling the psychological examination and the polygraph, which will put you that much closer to your goal of protecting and serving.
